ANALYSIS OF A MOBILE GAS COMPRESSOR
One of our customers requested a simulation on a future product working in explosive environment, to figure out flow conditions around the product. However this product is a bit special in this category because it is a mobile gas compressor mounted on a 13.6m long semi-trailer.
The information our partner required was the following. In order to qualify the compressor for ATEX (94/9EC) directive it is a must to know the flow conditions of air around the whole assembly. Around the trailer the ventilators of the heat exchanger move air with the volume flow of 2700 m3/min. The compressor and its accessories are all gas tight of course but in case of a leakage it is a must to know the airspeed and direction of airflow at the location of the leakage. From this information gas concentration can be calculated and the locations can be determined where flanges and other bolted connections must not be placed.
The project started with creating the 3 dimensional model of the assembly. The model consisted of the semi-trailer, the heat exchanger and its ventilators, the compressor, pressure vessels, pipes and the volumes of the surrounding air.
The completed analysis was evaluated together with the customer: the air speed was shown in 18 cross sections both with magnitude and in vector form as well. Based on these results some locations were determined where the speed of air was too low to place a pipe connection or other equipment.
The biggest advantage of such a simulation with CFdesign was that we could virtually test a machine 13.6 meter long before building it as a prototype. There is no other method to make such a test in such a short timeframe (one week). Other methods could provide measured data in some points but this information would never reach the level of details CFdesign could provide.
If your company has some special equipment difficult and expensive to build as a prototype or you do not have time to wait more than one or two weeks for CFD results, call us for a simulation.
