SIMULATION OF EXPLOSIONS
In case of a traditionally complicated physical phenomenon like an explosion the Upfront way of looking at things can also be used.
Simulation of explosions is interesting on many fields. Apart from defense and military applications (where shock wave blocking on the streets and between buildings is an important issue), industrial processes can also make a good use of such simulations. It is important to know what happens if dust or gases enrich in the examined area. Pressure vessels, cyclofilters, pipelines are the affected equipment. Safety blowdown elements should be used in these applications, blowdown pressure, location of the element can be analysed effectively. The difference compared to traditional CFD codes and other methods are the speed and automation we have when CFdesign is used. Of course these comparative advantages are handy when doing all the other simulation types as well.
It is known that in cubic devices (like pressure vessels) shock waves behave differently (and less harmful) than in pipes. This is why we must know where to position the blowdown elements, their proper opening pressure values must be set beforehand to provide safe operation of the device. Shock wave propagation can be predicted, wall forces can be determined in such a simulation.
On the picture the shock wave propagation is shown as an iso surface of velocity magnitude in a pipe. The simulation is highly transient. The analysis was made for one of our partners, it was presented that not only a single point of explosion start but multiple explosions at different locations with time delay and the interaction of these explosions can be examined.
